Overview
Brooke Elementary School is a 52,282 square foot school facility constructed in 1954 situated on 5.38 acres in East Austin bordered by 4th Street, Linden Street, 5th Street and Tillery Street.
Brooke closed after the 2019-2020 school year. Students were reassigned to either - for students living north of the Colorado River - or - for students south of the river.
Brooke is currently home to a variety of Austin ISD departments that provide daily support to all district staff, students and families. These include:
- Special Education - supports the Austin ISD mission of ensuring that children who receive special education services are provided with access to a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. The team also works to ensure that students receive a quality education that enables them to achieve their potential and participate fully in future social, economic and educational opportunities.
- Ombuds Office - provides a safe and confidential space for students, families and community members to ask questions, share concerns and seek informal assistance in resolving issues related to Austin ISD. It also identifies systemic concerns and makes recommendations to leadership to promote equity and improve the culture and climate of Austin ISD.
Current Status
In April 2025, the Board of Trustees passed a resolution declaring the Brooke Elementary School property as excess/surplus.
The facility does not meet the District’s current Education Specifications in terms of classroom size and configuration, site circulation for bus and parent drop-off, and safety and security. Modernization would require significant renovation and would reduce capacity. Further, current and projected enrollment does not support opening another school in this district.
The District will commence efforts to dispose of the tract of land via ground lease or sale. Staff will return to the Board to authorize the execution of any future lease or sale agreement.
