Why do I need to complete a background check to volunteer?

To help keep our schools safe, all volunteers must complete a background check. This step ensures we follow district policies and protect our students and staff. 

How do I complete the background check?

Visit  to register as a volunteer. Once you create a profile. The system will guide you through submitting your background check. 

How long does it take to process my background check?

It usually takes 2-5 business days. You’ll receive an email from volunteerchecks@austinisd.org once it’s complete. 

What happens if I pass the background check?

Once your background check is approved, you’re good to go! Just remember: All volunteers must check in at the school office through the Navigate 360 system each time they visit.

What happens if I don’t pass my background check, and can I appeal the results?

If your background check results in a disqualification, you’ll receive an email letting you know that you’re not approved to volunteer. If you believe there’s been a mistake or would like to appeal, email us at volunteerchecks@austinisd.org, and we’ll guide you through the next steps.

Can I still volunteer if I have a criminal record? 

Depending on the nature of the record, some criminal history may disqualify you from volunteering. Each case is reviewed on an individual basis. 

What type of offenses will disqualify me from volunteering?

The following may disqualify a volunteer: 

  1. A felony conviction or deferred adjudication for a felony.
  2. A misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, drugs, or alcohol within the past five years.
  3. Pending charges related to those offenses.
  4. Sexual-related crimes or registration in a sexual offender database.

What if my background check is delayed?

Reach out to us at volunteerchecks@austinisd.org if it’s been more than five business days. We’ll look into it for you.

Do I need a new background check each school year?

Yes. Every school year, all volunteers must reply to . You’ll update your info, review the guidelines, and submit a new background check. 

Can I still visit my child at school if I didn’t pass the background check?

Yes. You’re still welcome to visit your child—for example, to drop something off or attend a meeting. Just check in at the front office through Navigate 360. A volunteer background check is only required if you’re actively volunteering, such as mentoring or helping with school events.
