Austin ISD Celebrates Juneteenth

AUSTIN, TX—Austin ISD staff members, students and the Austin community will celebrate Juneteenth at this year’s parade.

What: ºÚÁϹÙÍø team members and members of the Board of Trustees will lead the ºÚÁϹÙÍø All-Star band in the parade, showcasing custom-designed ºÚÁϹÙÍø T-shirts and carrying an ºÚÁϹÙÍø banner.

Schedule of events:

10 a.m. Saturday, June 15            Juneteenth Historical Parade             Comal St. and MLK Blvd.

Background: Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday commemorating the day Texas learned President Lincoln declared the end of slavery. The official holiday is June 19.

ºÚÁϹÙ꿉۪s Department of Communications and Community Engagement is coordinating the district’s involvement in the parade as part of its efforts to improve outreach to the African-American community. The parade is sponsored by the Greater East Austin Youth Association, the City of Austin and Austin Parks and Recreation.
